Journal work:
This weekend you will begin reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This novel begins with several letters from a sea captain that is about to set sail for the North Pole. He is extremely excited about the adventure, and as you read his letters, you will see that he is believes that the journey is worth risking everything he has.
The desire to risk “everything” for a particular experience is not a common experience. In our society, we are generally taught that unrestrained desire is a bad thing, unless it is aimed at purchasing. My question for you is this: What, in your estimation, would be an experience that would be worth the price of “risking it all”? Explain in specific detail.
Group Work:
Now that we have had some time to write, I want you to think about and discuss a related topic. What connection, if any can you find between the experiences of unrestricted desire and the experience of childhood. How might these two experiences be connected? Come up with specific examples.
